Where is the Durmitor National Park?
The Durmitor National Park is located in the north-western corner of Montenegro in Europe, within the Dinaric Alps.

About the park
The park was established in 1952, and covers 339 square kilometres. Making the Durmitor National Park not only the largest of Montenegro's five national parks, but also the largest protected area in Montenegro.

What's in the Durmitor National Park?
It is home to the country's highest peak, Bobotov Kuk, at a height of over 2,500 metres (8,200 ft). Along with over 40 other mountains which are all higher than 2000 metres! Easily making the Durmitor park one of the best places for hiking in Montenegro.

Furthermore, it also has 18 glacial mountain lakes and Europe's deepest canyon - the Tara River Canyon! And is home to a range of wildlife - from over 160 different bird species to wolves, bears and eagles!

The Hotel Sveti Stefan
It was not until the middle of the 20th century, 1950-1960, that the small old town was completely renovated as part of a hotel project, preserving its original character with pretty stone cottages, romantic alleys and typical red roofs and shutters. Celebrities and politicians from all over the world, like Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren and Elizabeth Taylor have been guests here. Since 2007, the entire island of Sveti Stefan, together with Villa Milocer on the mainland, has become a complex of the Aman Sveti Stefan Luxury Resort, a high end top-class 5-star hotel.

Mamula Island

During the period of the Venetian Republic rule, the island was known as Rondina.

The island has a fort, built in 1853 by Austro-Hungarian general Lazar Mamula. The fort takes up about 90% of the island's surface area. Along with the fortification on Prevlaka's Cape Oštro as well as Arza fortification on Luštica's Cape Arza, both of which were erected at the same time also on suggestion by general Lazar Mamula, fort Mamula was part of the Austro-Hungarian Army's contingency plans of preventing the enemy entrance into the Bay of Kotor.

Concentration camp in World War II

During World War II, from 30 May 1942 onwards, the fascist forces of Benito Mussolini's Kingdom of Italy converted the Mamula fort into a concentration camp. The concentration camp was known for torture and cruelty to prisoners. Most of the camp's prisoners came from the neighboring area.

Luxury resort development

In early January 2016 the government of Montenegro, over the objections of those who were once imprisoned on the island, approved a plan to convert the site of this former concentration camp into a luxury beach resort by Switzerland-based Orascom Development Holding AG under a 49-year lease deal. Former United Nations Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali had previously written the Montenegrin Parliament expressing surprise that the "only solution for preserving and using the fort is a mere business arrangement and privatisation agreement."

Description: the beach is located in a cove on the Lustica peninsula. The coast is covered with white pebble, but there are also paved areas. Around the beaches are great olive groves. The water in the bay Zanjice has beautiful shade of turquoise color. During the summer months, often along the coast are passing sea taxi boats which give opportunity to tourists easily switch to the desired beaches or the surrounding attractions as island Mamula, or the Blue Cave.
