Boka Bay – Everlasting Beauty
The first thing that you probably notice when you explore Montenegro is the stunning Bay of Kotor. The Bay of Kotor is just one of four small bays that form a much bigger and unique fjord-like Boka Bay. One of the most beautiful bays not only on the Adriatic coast but in the whole world is located in Montenegro. Boka Bay for centuries until the present time has been the inspiration for many travel writers, sudden passengers, kings, queens, philosophers, and many others. Many of them left the stories behind this beautiful scenery. A reminder of that can be a nickname that Boka Bay carries – Bride of the Adriatic, named by Serbian poet Aleksa Santic when he first visited Montenegro and wrote a poem called by the same name. Nobel prize winner Irish writer, George Bernard Shaw, wrote about the stunning sceneries and panoramic roads that he took in Montenegro. Lord Byron once said that probably the most beautiful encounter of sea and land happened here at Montenegrin littoral. These are just some of the examples of many written traces of the beauty of this place.
The best way to start exploring the Bay itself is from above. At the end of the Bay, there is a panoramic road named in different expressions. Ladder of Kotor, Serpentines of Kotor, Kanice, Hairpin Bend Road, Old Austro-Hungarian Road, Zig-Zag Road, etc. We will call it her Serpentines of Kotor. The road will take you through 25 serpentines or curves to discover breathtaking views. Once you get to the 25th curve it will be clear that it is the best view that one can experience in Montenegro. Travel2Montenegro offers an amazing tour that will take you there. Well, that is just the beginning.
The second way to discover this marvelous stunning beauty is to rent a speedboat tour. If you want to find out what places you can visit during the tour please follow the link and you will learn everything about this activity.
The third way is to drive alongside the Bay and again Travel2Montenegro offers numerous options for this activity. Follow the link to find out more.
Boka Bay is a stunningly beautiful fjord-like that stretches for approximately 30 kilometers along the country’s southwestern coastline. The bay is surrounded by cliffs that rise to over 1200 meters, creating a dramatic and awe-inspiring landscape. The waters of the bay are crystal clear and teeming with marine life such as dolphins and various species of fish. The bay is dotted with picturesque villages, historic churches and castles, and quaint fishing towns that offer a glimpse into the region’s rich cultural heritage. The area is also known for its mild Mediterranean climate and offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking along the cliffs and swimming in the clear waters. Overall, Boka Bay is a true gem of the Adriatic coastline, and a visit to this breathtaking destination is a must for anyone traveling to Montenegro.
The Bay is the home to numerous cultural, historical, natural, and military curiosities. Let us start with culture and history.
The history of the Bay was very turbulent throughout the centuries. The Bay often had challenges to keep one ruler so civilizations shifted here for centuries. From the early influence of Illyrian culture through Roman temples and villas to the dark Medieval times that are followed by the prosperity of Venetian influence and later military governance of the Austrian Empire. That left many traces in architecture. Today the Bay is representative when it comes to fortified medieval towns. The best example of that is Kotor Old Town. To book a tour and explore Old Town follow the link.
The bay also offers the possibility to engage with nature, my favorite part of the Bay is mostly in the wilderness of the Lustica peninsula that hides endless hidden beaches and panoramic roads. The former military center also hides many lost fortifications from different periods as well as submarine tunnels and interconnecting underground shelters. Today it is frequently visited by many travelers who are seeking to experience something different and off the beaten path. Travel 2 Montenegro offers many options in our section Off the beaten path.
Boka Bay is everlasting beauty and if you ever decide to visit Montenegro this Bay must be on your list.
